George Legrady was born in Budapest, Hungary, grew up in Montreal, Canada, and currently resides in Paris, France, and Santa Barbara, California where he is Distinguished Professor in the Media Arts & Technology graduate program, and directs the Experimental Visualization Lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Legrady’ background was in conceptual-based photography, and he acquired computational practice in the studio of the Artificial Intelligence pioneer Harold Cohen in the early 1980s. Since that time, he has internationally exhibited his works as interactive computational driven installations. For his pioneering work, Legrady received a John Simon Guggenheim Visual Arts Fellowship in 2016.
His works are in the collections of the Pompidou Center, Paris, Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, National Gallery of Canada, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Philbrook Museum of Art, the ZKM (Center for Art & Media Museum), and others.
