Adam BELT (born 1975, Lives and work in California)

Over the past decade, Adam Belt has focused his art around the natural forces that course through the universe. In paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations, the evanescent is made palpable. Smoky Hollow and Dolomite, are part of a larger body of work where he reexamines his relationship to the landscape and landscape painting. At the forefront of this direction is the gap between the idea of place and actual place. These topographies explore the experience of in-between places on the way to more recognized points of interest. In-between places are often free from the imposed perception from images and post cards that more prominent locations, like The Grand Canyon or Death Valley, are laden with. The works simultaneously allude to locations by their geological features while highlighting viewer’s sense of their own movement in the exhibition space by the shifting light of the highly reflective surface. The Down the Rabbit Hole series are based on the forms of particle collider detectors. The works employ mirrors to create an infinite reflection alluding to the scale of what we are trying to grasp through those experimental apparatus.
