Edward Avedisian (1936-2007)

Untitled

acrylic on canvas

1968

190x320cm

Edward Avedisian attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and then moved to New York City, where he was active in the vibrant downtown art scene, frequenting the Cedar Tavern on Tenth Street, associating with the critic Clement Greenberg, and affiliating with the new generation of abstract artists interested in experimentation and freedom. In 1962, the influential gallery Robert Elkon took on the representation of Avedisian and gave him a one-man show. By 1963, Avedisian had transitioned to a hard-edge approach, portraying primarily large striped circles. Brian O`Dougherty noted the shift in Avedisian`s work in the New York Times, stating that his ''targets woo the eye . . . in a sort of shooting match of after images.'' Avedisian was included in the annual of the Whitney Museum for the first time in 1963, and two years later, in MoMA`s, The Responsive Eye.
